Roatán, the largest of the Bay Islands is located in the sheltered Western Caribbean approximately 30 miles off the North Coast of Honduras and South of Belize.

Roatán island is gorgeous and renowned for the second largest barrier reef in the world. The Bay Islands are home to 96% of all marine life in the Caribbean.

Unlike most Caribbean islands, ocean front and oceanview real estate on Roatán still retains remarkable value and is showing robust appreciation. For those seeking island property Oceano is a must see. Being secluded from the busy west end of Roatán means Oceano buyers have secure Caribbean property, professionally managed for lock-and-leave convenience.

With a Caribbean culture and predominantly English speaking, the population of Roatán is a blend of British, Spanish, Payan Indian and African cultures.

Known for world class diving, Roatán and Oceano is now a place called home for an increasing number of astute property purchasers. For those who appreciate the value, burgeoning market, accessibility, tax-free freeport status and easy year-round living. You are secure buying from Oceano, safe in the knowledge you’re working with a world class team with a proven track record and a hard earned reputation for excellence.

Roatan is an authentic gem, a real jewel in the Caribbean - the largest of the three scenic Bay Islands (which include Guanaja and Utila), and is in the process of being converted to a ‘freeport’.  Roatan is about 30 miles long and two miles across at its widest point.  A hilly ridge traverses the center of the island, with the high point at some 800 feet.  The estimated population of the island is 65,000 most of whom are on the western end of the island and away from Oceano. The Westin hotel will be on the bay to our west.

Oceano village lies in the perfect Caribbean location, enjoying great weather, cooling breezes, a sheltered bay, protection from Caribbean storms, and is regarded as one of the best diving locations in the world due to it being located on the Great Mayan Reef, secondly only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, as the largest coral reef in the world.

Q: How easy is it to travel to Roatan?

A: The island is easily accessed via direct flights to Roatan through Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Newark or Milan, Italy by Delta, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, TACA, Islena and seasonally via scheduled charter airlines.  Additional daily connecting flights are available through San Pedro Sula on the Honduran mainland.

Q: What language is spoken?

A: Because Honduras was formerly part of the British Empire, and Roatan is a popular destination of Canadians and Americans, you will find that English is widely spoken by locals either as a first or second language.

Q: What is the climate in Roatan?

A: We love it! - The climate on Roatan is tropical, with temperatures typically ranging between 21° to 32° C (70° to 90° F) and humidity in the 75% range.  The average annual daily temperature is 27° C (82° F).  One of the best things about the Roatan climate is that a constant sea breeze provides a natural cooling effect and makes temperatures that might be comparable to Mexico or the southern U.S. feel far cooler and much more comfortable.  The rainiest months are late October through early January, but residents are sure to enjoy plenty of Caribbean sunshine all year round.

Q: What about adverse weather?

A: Roatan is located outside the typical Caribbean hurricane alley, and statistically is hit only once every 26 years on average.  In 1998, Hurricane Mitch was an anomaly as the fourth strongest hurricane on record and uncharacteristically swept across Roatan and mainland Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatamala.  Although mainland areas were impacted, Roatan, in particular the south shore (where Oceano is located), was unscathed by the event.  Although the press reported that Roatan sustained major damage, the only damage was in Punta Gorda and the west end due to sub-standard construction.

Oceano’s location, on the south shore of the island, is well protected by the narrow channel between Roatan and the mainland; by Caribe Point Bight - the sheltered bay within which the project is located, and by the island’s protective coral reefs. These all combine to provide exceptional protection – hence the majority of local settlements on this shore.  These factors, combined with the fact the project is constructed to exceed Dade Co. Florida hurricane standards, should give owners enormous peace of mind that their investment in Oceano will be a safe one.

Q: What about shopping, communications and dining?

A: Roatan is an authentic, real Caribbean island, it isn’t a touristic mecca by any means. However you will have no problem finding all the things required to make your time on the island comfortable, including the conveniences for modern living, including high speed Internet service, cell coverage and TV – all of which are available at Oceano.

Roatan has many great dining and eating options in multiple locations so discovering them is part of the fun! Local produce is delightful and the seafood is a specialty.

Q: How far away are my favorite island activities from Oceano?

A: Our soft white sand beach, boating, dining, snorkeling and tennis are a stroll from your veranda. Fishing, boating and sailing will be at the community boat dock. A new Pete Dye golf course will be an easy drive from your door. Oceano will have bustling local shops, cozy cafes and fine dining. SuperMarket, gas station and stores are a few kilometers away in French Harbour via tranquil country lanes connected directly to Oceano. For morning walks and leisurely pedaling the trails and roads are safe and provide great variety and views.

If you’re looking for more than a nap on the beach or a good book by the pool, the recreational activities are extensive, and bustling West Bay and West End are a 45-minute drive.

Q: Are there medical facilities close to Oceano?

A: There are several clinics, two hospitals and a decompression chamber for divers. One of the hospitals is private. Modern state-of-the-art equipment and well-trained doctors are on call 24 hours/day. Ambulance service is available on Roatan. Larger world-class medical centers are available and readily accessible on the mainland. A helipad will be incorporated into Oceano.
